Crucial is a Micron brand, and Micron is recognized for producing high-quality memory components. For today’s review, we’ve got a Crucial Ballistix Gaming Memory kit for the desktop PC. This is a fantastic kit with the perfect specifications and pricing for any current gaming PC that uses DDR4. 

The Crucial Ballistix 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600 Desktop Gaming Memory (Black) BL2K8G36C16U4B kit is the one we’re looking at today. For $84.99 MSRP, you get two 8GB DDR4-3600 PC4-28800 CL16 memory modules for a total of 16GB. In fact, as of this writing, they are available from Newegg for just $75.98, a fantastic price for fast RAM on any current gaming machine.

Ballistix branded desktop PC memory is found under Crucial’s gaming-specific RAM. Ballistix MAX RAM modules are designed for extreme gamers, overclockers, and enthusiasts, while Ballistix RAM modules are designed for those who want great performance but want to save money. The Ballistix modules still come with Crucial’s proprietary heatsink spreader, which comes in a variety of colors. We’re going to look at a kit from this category today. However, we will be reviewing a Ballistix MAX kit soon, so stay tuned.

Crucial provides RAM in a variety of speeds, ranging from DDR4-2667 to DDR4-3000, DDR4-3200, and DDR4-3600. Then, under the Ballistix name, Crucial sells a variety of memory kits, including 2 x 8GB (16GB) kits, 2 x 16GB (32GB) kits, and even 2 x 32GB (64GB) kits. They are available in either black, white, or red without RGB or black, white, and red with RGB. This provides you a plethora of RAM alternatives.   

DDR4-3600 16GB RAM Kit from Crucial

Two 8GB DDR4-3600 CL16 (CAS Latency 16) memory modules are included in the bundle. They work together in dual-channel mode at 3600MT/s (Mega-Transfers per second), totaling 16GB. BL8G36C16U4B.M8FE1 8GB DDR4-3600 w/XMP is the name of the individual DRAM modules. They do, however, support XMP profiles as well as AMD DOCP. At 1.35V, the timings are 16-18-18-38 CR 1T. When you activate the DOCP profile, it looks like this. These are non-ECC UDIMMs that haven’t been buffered. 

A custom Crucial heat spreader covers both sides of the modules. It has a strong, sturdy, and well-made feel about it in the hand. Additional surface bumps and top regions aid in heat dissipation. The PCB is black, which goes well with the black metal heat spreader. The heat spreader has a rough feeling, almost like rubber; it’s not smooth or slick metal, but it has a pleasant texture and is sturdy. We have the black version, however you can also obtain red or white heat spreader models. Although ours does not feature RGB, RGB versions are available.

These modules are small enough in height that they do not interfere with the installation of an air cooler or an AIO cooler. The modules are 1.5′′ tall. If you have an AIO radiator at the top of your case, for example, it is simpler to place huge radiators at the top, or if you have a small case, they are not big. Default Configuration

We’re using an ASUS TUF GAMING X570-Plus Wi-Fi motherboard with a Ryzen 5 5600X CPU to install our RAM. There were no problems using this RAM or overclocking it on this machine. 

When you install the RAM and keep the motherboard BIOS’s default “Auto” RAM option, the RAM will operate at DDR4-2667 JDEC speed. The specs of the RAM at default, on Auto, may be seen in the CPUz, HWiNFO64, and AIDA64 information above. The DRAM frequency is 1333MHz, the FCLK frequency is 1333MHz, and the UCLK frequency is 1333MHz. On Auto, the CAS Latency is 20-19-19-43 CR 1T and 1.2V, which is rather high.

DDR4-3600 D.O.C.P.

To get the most out of this RAM, set the BIOS to its recommended XMP or D.O.C.P. profile. This memory supports XMP 2.0 and AMD D.O.C.P. (DRAM Overclocking Profile.) The BIOS shows that it supports D.O.C.P DDR4-3600 16-18-18-38 @ 1.35V, which is the memory’s rated voltage. According to ZenTimings, it operates at 1800MHz, with the FCLK frequency at 1800MHz and the UCLK frequency at 1800MHz. With a Command Rate of 1T at 1.35V, the timings are 16-18-18-18-18-38.

The purpose of our overclocking process for RAM is to boost the frequency as high as possible while using the RAM’s fastest XMP or D.O.C.P. profile timings and voltage. We’re interested in seeing how high the RAM can overclock while retaining its rated voltage and XMP/D.O.C.P. timings. We increase the DRAM and FCLK frequencies while keeping a 1:1 ratio to avoid bottlenecking the AMD Infinity Fabric and introducing delay with the RAM at its rated voltage and XMP/D.O.C.P. timings.

Above are our BIOS settings for the highest stable overclock on this memory, which we found to be 1.35 Voltage and timings of 16-18-18-18-38 CR 1T. With the same voltage and timings, our RAM was able to reach 3933MHz instead of 3600MHz. To preserve the best performance advantage, we increased the FCLK Frequency to 1966MHz. This kept the DRAM and FCLK Frequency at a 1:1 ratio.

The DRAM frequency is exactly 1967MHz, and the FCLK and UCLK frequencies are also 1967MHz, according to ZenTimings. 16-18-18-18-18-38 CR 1T remains the same. You can see that these settings passed the memory test with flying colors in TestMem5.

We also attempted upgrading the RAM to DDR4-4000, however we had failures in TestMem5, despite the fact that the machine booted well. It’s plausible that DDR4-4000 would be stable with a voltage bump over 1.35V, maybe up to 1.38V or even 1.4V, and that it would operate. This is, however, outside of the RAM module’s technical specifications. Pushing it so hard, in our view, isn’t worth the additional Voltage, particularly if you require stability and trust in your system.

The “crucial ballistix 3600 timings” is a 16GB DDR4 RAM kit from Crucial. The memory kit has a high speed of 3600MHz and low voltage of 1.2V. It also comes with a lifetime warranty, which makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers.
