Spencer is a movie about a princess who has to save her kingdom in 72 hours. The film was directed by Andy Tennant and stars Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad.
MOVIE REVIEW – With “Jackie,” director Pablo Larran defied genre norms, and now with “Spencer,” he delves into the crises of another legendary lady as the last vestiges of her “fairytale” marriage shatter.
This isn’t a biopic in the traditional sense. Everyone who sees Spencer in theaters (since that’s the only place it’ll be shown) should know that Kristen Stewart, who was born in Los Angeles, gives the best performance of her life as Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales.
Castle made of ice, doomed love, and mental collapse
Just don’t expect Diana’s whole narrative to be told. Spencer depicts just 72 hours of the legendary and tragic Princess’s tumultuous life as she prepares to celebrate Christmas 1991 at Sandringham with the royal family and Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) – in a literally ice-cold castle (the British royal family doesn’t heat the place) – as they experience arguably one of the worst moments of their now-completed relationship.
It’s not as straightforward as that. Diana’s mental collapse was aggravated by her obsessive behavior of cutting herself, bulimia, and vomiting, which was exacerbated by her being a member of a chilly royal family. If it weren’t for the presence of her adored boys William (Jack Nielen) and Harry, Diana would happily hide (or perhaps depart) (Freddie Spry).
This great character drama from Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain, whose film “Jackie” won Natalie Portman an Oscar nod for her depiction of JFK’s widow in the turbulent time immediately after the murder, becomes a shattered mirror of a woman’s psyche.
In the countryside, I became lost.
Larrain imagines Diana as lost from the outset, working with a hallucinatory scenario by Stephen Knight. She can hardly locate the castle on her own when she drives down to it. She pauses at a café to enquire, “Where am I?” after disobeying convention by driving himself (without protection) to Queen Elizabeth’s (a stiffly chilly Stella Gonet) rural palace. The observers are speechless; they are so taken aback by the appearance of Princess Diana that they are unable to respond to this basic inquiry.
Diana is advised to dress as required after being weighed when she comes late, which is another act of defiance. It’s a Victorian tradition, with visitors being weighed in and out to ensure that they haven’t gained weight from the nonstop royal dining.
Crazy? There’s more to come. Servants search Diana’s pillow for hairs from a possible hidden lover. To keep the photographers out, her bedroom drapes are stitched shut. Diana imagines herself as Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s murdered second wife, since royal disfavor weighs so heavily on her.
They make sure she’s in order.

Of course, Kristen Stewart isn’t the first Diana; in The Crown, she played Emma Corrin and Elizabeth Debick, and Jenna de Waalig portrayed her in the musical Diana: The Musical. Nonetheless, Stewart’s three-day portrayal of Diana is unlike anything else, and it is tellingly, thrillingly alive.
