Blizzard has released a new patch for Diablo II: Resurrected, addressing the issue of characters disappearing and losing progress. This is the first major update to the game since it was released in 2015.

Blizzard’s long-awaited Diablo II remake debuted this week, but early gamers reported a slew of problems, including offline characters vanishing and/or complete loss of progress. Fortunately, Blizzard seems to have discovered the problem and has issued a new patch (9.24) that should fix some of the game’s remaining issues. It also offers solutions for more common, but equally aggravating, problems like crashes.
General
- Saves for offline characters with the identical names as their online counterparts were fixed.
- Fixed an issue that prevented players from starting a game in their own area after joining one in another.
- A bug that caused the in-game cinematics to stutter or halt has been fixed.
Performance and Stability
- Fixed a problem that caused players using controllers to crash while starting the game (for PC)
- Fixed a problem that may have caused players to crash when they first started the game due to an audio issue.
Community manager Hooley sends out a pre-patch letter that explains the contents of the update and what the devs are doing to enhance the game:
Some players have complained that their offline characters have vanished or that their progress has been lost, and we think we’ve found the source of the problem. We created a 6.7k article explaining how to avoid losing offline character progress to prevent this from affecting your experience. We plan to provide a permanent patch for this today for PC and soon after for consoles.
Our staff is also trying to address the problem of character lockouts. A large number of these characters have previously been unlocked. This procedure is expected to take a few hours to finish.
We’ve been reviewing actions that have stopped players from being able to establish or join game lobbies for individuals who have been unable to participate in those sessions. We’re working hard to find a solution to these problems.
In addition, our staff has been keeping track of gamers’ uptime all around the world. As part of our efforts to make Diablo II: Resurrected as stable as possible, we’ve been examining crash complaints across all platforms.
In addition, we’re looking into the AVX problem, which is stopping gamers from starting the game. We’ll keep you updated as things proceed if anything new comes up on this front.
Finally, we’ve been seeing a variety of gameplay problems and comments, and we’ll give a more detailed update on those things once we finish with the above.
Diablo II: Resurrected is currently available on PC (through Battle.net), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5 (PS4 and PS5), and Nintendo Switch. The game is also included in a “Prime Evil Collection,” which also contains Diablo III and additional material.
