Penrith had to settle for a penalty goal after failing to capitalize on consecutive setups close to South’s goal line, giving them a two-point advantage at halftime. The Penrith Panthers defeated the South Sydney Rabbitohs to win the NRL title in 2021. Penrith went the hard way around to reach the season’s final game for the second year in a row after losing in the Grand Final to the Melbourne Storm previous season. After losing to the Souths in the last qualifying round, Penrith needed to beat Parramatta (8-6) and then Melbourne (10-6) to have a shot at revenge. Dane Gagai of South Sydney was doubtful after suffering a head injury early in the game, but he recovered to play the remainder of the game.

Penrith made several early mistakes in the second half, resulting in a penalty that was converted to tie the game at eight each. Souths’ Cody Walker misjudged a pass, allowing Stephen Crichton to intercept it and run in for a try.

South’s kicker Adam Reynolds, who had been dealing with an injury, missed the extra point from the sideline, leaving his team down 14-12. Reynolds had one final opportunity to tie the game and send it to overtime with less than a minute left. His hurried two-point field goal attempt, though, went short.

Penrith then kept possession of the ball for the last minute, securing their first championship since 2003.

Nathan Cleary and his father, Ivan, who is also the Penrith coach, were just the second father-son combo in NRL history to win a title. In the Panthers’ 2003 premiership victory against the Sydney Roosters, another Penrith pair, John and Martin Lang, set the record.
